A young player with Arcos CF, he made his bow in Segunda Division B in 2006, having signed for Racing Club Portuense.
He then continued in the third tier of Spanish football, playing for Real Betis B, Estepona and CP Cacereno.
Spells followed with FC Cartegena and Barakaldo before he signed for second-tier Real Jaen in July 2013.
That September he made his professional debut, keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 Copa del Rey win against CD Numancia, and he made 33 league games in two seasons with the club.
In July 2014 he moved to fellow Segunda Division side UE Llagostera, where he was first choice, but following relegation he spent the 2016/17 campaign with Girona.
In the summer of 2017 Rene signed a two-year contract with Almeria where he has been a regular since joining the club.
