Making his senior debut with local club Arcos CF in 2002/03, he was signed by Segunda Division B side Portuense in the summer of 2006.
The following season he switched to Real Betis B, where he went on to make 48 league appearances, and was named on the first-team’s substitutes’ bench on three occasions.
Spells followed with Estepona, Cacereno, Cartagena and Barakaldo before his next extended run of games came following a move to recently promoted Seguna Division side Real Jaen in July 2013.
That September he made his professional debut against CD Numancia in the Copa del Rey and then made his league debut the following month – keeping a clean sheet on both occasions.
In July 2014 Rene switched to fellow second-tier club UE Llagostera, where he made 68 league appearances, before spending the 2016/17 campaign with Girona.
He helped the club win promotion to La Liga for the first time ever before joining second-tier Almeria, where he has since made over 100 appearances.
In January 2020 he joined SD Ponferradina on loan.
