Gulacsi: best season of my career
Peter Gulacsi has called his first season of Bundesliga football as the best of his career.
The 26-year-old has been instrumental in RB Leipzig's momentous campaign in which they currently sit second in the table, while he has also cemented his position as Hungary's first-choice keeper.
He said: "It does not happen with many players that they become number one of their club and their country at the same time. One week after my Bundesliga debut match against Hoffenheim, I finished my first international match as Hungary's number one. This season has been the highlight of my career so far; it's also been important that I've been able to give the team an important push, giving us the wings to win games."
Gulasci has also saved two of three penalties this season and his standing in the game has certainly come a long way from his days at Liverpool, where he failed to make a first-team appearance and was sent out on loan to lowly Hereford, Tranmere and Hull City.
"I was only 18 and playing for the reserve team at Liverpool," he recalls. "The coach, Rafa Benitez, sent me to the third division to gain experience of playing in a senior team so I joined Hereford.
"I impressed during my time there and was given a new contract by Liverpool, and also spent time with Tranmere and Hull. It might not have worked out for me in the Premier League, but those experiences have helped me get to where I am today."
Joining Red Bull Salzburg on a permanent deal in 2013, Gulacsi made the short journey to RB Leipzig in 2015. He made an inauspicious start, picking up a red card in his second game, but since Fabio Coltorti suffered an injury in February 2016, he hasn't looked back.
"If everything had been so easy, I wouldn't have come so far and I've certainly made a lot of progress these past two years but I know there is much more to come from me."
