The former Bristol City trainee came through the ranks to make his debut in a 2-2 FA Cup third round draw against West Bromwich Albion in October 2013.
He then had loan spells in the National League with Kidderminster Harriers and Solihull Moors to gain experience before penning a new three-year deal with the Robins in the summer of 2018.
Max went on to make his full league debut that October in a 1-0 win against Brentford and played 15 times in the Championship that season.
In May 2019, he was called into the Republic of Ireland squad for the first time, ahead of the UEFA 2020 qualifiers against Denmark and Gibraltar.
Two months later he signed a one-year loan deal with League One side Shrewsbury Town.
