Lonergan earned a reputation as one of the best goalkeepers outside of the Premier League during his 11-year career at Preston North End.

He made almost 200 Championship appearances for the club, winning a number of Player of the Year awards, before joining Leeds United in 2011.

In his one season at Elland Road he was the club’s first-choice keeper before moving to Bolton Wanderers, where he spent three years before heading south to Fulham.

Making 29 Championship appearances in the 2015/16 season, he then headed north again – first to Wolves and then back to Leeds – before joining Middlesbrough for the 2018/19 campaign.

He played for the Republic of Ireland at U16 level before making ten appearances for the England U20 side.
